Professor Nina Weisling, left, of the Education Department won the Distinguished Teaching Award for 2023-24. She is shown with previous winner Julie Dawson, who presented the award May 8, 2024. Since joining the Carthage faculty in 2019, Prof. Weisling has consistently won over students with individualized mentorship. Exhibiting an “innate ability to keep her students engaged and empowered,” she has likewise impressed fellow faculty members.

“What truly sets her apart is her unwavering dedication to her students’ well-being,” said presenter Julie Dawson, the previous year’s Distinguished Teaching Award recipient. “Beyond the confines of the classroom, she serves as a beacon of support, offering guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear to all who seek her counsel.”

Before entering higher education, Prof. Weisling worked in the Chicago and Philadelphia school systems as an educator, case manager, and instructional coach. At Carthage, she combines a commitment to culturally responsive instruction with “tireless” advocacy for students’ mental health.

“She encourages us to be proud of our work and to make a difference in the lives of the students with whom we have an opportunity to work. She pushes us to be our best and always tells us to trust our gut,” one student wrote on the nomination form. “She is exemplary of everything a teacher should be!”

Graduating seniors previously selected Prof. Weisling to give the faculty address at the 2023 Commencement celebration.
